Hot Dates: How to Keep Yourself Healthy and Entertained This Summer

Warm Weather Fun for Older Adults

Summer’s here and the time is right … for having fun outdoors in accordance with the CDC's revised guidelines for vaccinated older adults?

Admittedly, this isn’t quite as catchy as the Martha and the Vandella’s version, which called for dancing in the streets from New York to New Orleans. But after more than a year of COVID restrictions, many seniors will be doing at least a quiet jig as they anticipate a summer of restored freedoms and reunions with friends and family.

Just a note of caution: Summer activities carry their own health risks, particularly if you live in a hot climate. Here are some tips for soaking up the sun while staying safe.

Slap on that sunscreen...

Sunburn and sunstroke are unpleasant enough, but exposure to ultraviolet rays also increases your risk of skin cancer, a life-threatening disease that disproportionately affects older adults.

Get in the habit of applying sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every time you go outside, even if it's just to walk the dog. You should also wear a wide-brimmed hat and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

... but do catch some rays

We can focus so intensely on the risks of sunshine that we forget about the benefits. Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, which can strengthen your bones, boost your immune system and improve brain health. And because a little vitamin D goes a long way, you may feel the benefits even if your sunscreen is blocking out most of those UV rays.

Shake up your schedule

No one ever regrets getting up to watch the sun rise. But who has the willpower to crawl out from under a warm duvet to do it in winter?

During summer, on the other hand, dawn and dusk are often the most pleasant times to be outside. Have you ever been bird-watching before breakfast? How about a romantic walk in the twilight?

Regardless of your interests, this is a great time of year to add some variety to your day, either alone or as part of an organized group. Search online for clubs in your area, or join a vibrant community like Prime West Knoxville, where residents plan stimulating activities all year round.

Do some gentle exercise

Like the healthiest diets, the most effective exercise routines change with the seasons. If you have access to an outdoor body of water (natural or manmade), summer is a great time to splash around. Because of the buoyancy, swimming is easier on the joints than many other forms of exercise.

At Prime West Knoxville, staying fit and well also means having fun. Whether it's a stroll around the putting green or a game of pickleball, companionship and exercise go hand in hand.

Treat yourself

Summer wouldn't be summer without ice cream. Put a ring around July 18 on your calendar — it's National Ice Cream Day. To be honest, every day is ice cream day at Prime, where the bottomless soft serve is one of our bistro's main attractions.
